Y-DNA is the only part of your complete DNA that is passed down from father to son father to son father to son almost unchanged.

When testing the Y-DNA of your Smith family you will get results that look like a bunch of numbers.

These numbers are called STR values short tandem repeats. These STR values are found in certain locations on the YDNA and counted these locations are called DYS# or Markers.

When you compare your results to another person you will notice that the numbers are all the same or they are not even close to the same.

When the numbers are the same it is known as a match.

example if you have 12 Markers tested and you only match on 11 of those markers with another person it is called a 11/12 match. Some scholars try to put dates on these types of matches to find out when and where your most recent common ancestor was. It is very useful but in my personal opinion most of these dates are TOO Ancient.

YDNA also has locations called SNP Single Nucleotide Polymorphism. It is easier to tell THIS way who is closest related among the worlds popultation. Finding someone with the same SNPs that you have and than comparing your STR values will help determine who is closest related within a certain SNP group or Haplogroup.

Here are a few Smith lines seperated by there Haplogroup.

Jacob Smith born 1772 Montgomery County Virginia had three sons. He moved to Wayne County and is Located in 1850 Census of Wayne County. In 1860 he is located in Cabell County with his grandson Jacob Smith. Jacob SR's sons are Abraham b. 1800 is located in Wyoming County West Virginia 1850. Henry Smith b.1802 located Cabell County 1850. Jacob Jr. is located in Wayne County 1850.

The Haplogroup Tested for Jacob Smiths family is E1b1b1a2 /  V13

The Heinrich Smith (Schmidt)/ Jeremiah Smith (Schmidt) Family lived all over Virginia, West Virginia Kentucky. The haplogroup for this family is R1a1
